Graduation Dance - May 27, 2011

Last year at around this time I posted a rather controversial blog regarding my thoughts on the unruly behaviour of our students at the Graduation Dance.

I received more comments to that blog than any other post before or since.  I had just as many supporters as detractors for the record.

Time and consideration has had our Graduation planning committee hire a security company in addition to the usual duo of police officers.

The security company will be checking every student seeking admission to our dance for alcohol, drugs and/or weapons.  They will be making the determination to deny admittance to students that appear to be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

Please understand that the staff at CtK will not be making this decision.  Students attending the Graduation Dance have already received this important message from our Vice-Principals.

Our role will be to supervise the students granted admittance to celebrate what for all intents and purposes is the culmination of four years of hard work and dedication to reach the goal of graduation.

We would kindly ask parents/guardians to ensure that their children refrain from consuming any alcohol prior to this event.  Your partnership in  this regard is appreciated.

Thanks for reading.  Looking forward to your comments.

I do not have a student graduating this year, but think hiring a security company is an excellent idea. The pressure is taken off of the teachers who volunteer their time to be at the graduation. The teachers and students can relax and have a great time. It is no different then when you travel, you must comply with the security measures put in place, otherwise you will not make it to your flight. No student can whine, "Come on Miss/ Sir". No guilt will be felt by the Security Company as they do not have personal relationships with these students. I hope everyone has a blast.

  2. Why is it that the Grad dance in May? Would it not be better to have it after exams so that students would not be distracted from what is important and be able to fully enjoy their Grad knowing they had completed all their exams/assignments.

  3. Pleased that extra measures are being put in place to ensure the safety of all who will be attending the Prom. Just keep in mind that they are teenagers and will have some of that wonderful teenage attitude with them regardless of how well dressed and grown up they will look. Adults in charge need to start the event with dignified respect towards the students, to start a good atmosphere and a good example. This will ensure respect from the students will be returned. Long story short... treat others as you would like to be treated. Watch over them without bullying or prejudice. Good luck and God Bless

  4. Thank You CTK ! It is unfortunate that it takes our prinicpal to remind parents to take care of their own children, and "ensure their children refrain....", God gave us these Children to grow, to lead and to love, and if done as God wants these prom measures would not have to be inplace. Thank You CTK !

  5. It takes a village to raise a child. All are responsible, parents, teachers, clergy and even a brief encounter with a store clerk, gas attendant or standing beside someone in line. I have seen good and bad behaviour from all members of society towards our children. For the above commenter to put any assumed blame on parents alone is not seeing the full truth. Yes, thank you Mr DeSantis for putting these extra measures into place but don't solely blame parents for this decision. God does give us children to grow, lead and love but not just our own, we need to embrace all children as our own... IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD. THE WHOLE VILLAGE NEEDS TO RISE UP.

  6. As a CtK student about to graduate, who attended the dinner/dance this past Friday, I would just like to thank all the teachers, support staff, and administration who worked hard to put together such an enjoyable evening for all of us. It was a great way to celebrate all of our hard work, achievements, and as Mr. DeSantis said, our success. I hope we made the evening as enjoyable for you as you did for us! Thanks, and God bless! :)
